‘Nabi wanted him at Kaizer Chiefs’

Kaizer Chiefs set out to add another striker to their ranks ahead of the new season, with an improvement needed.

The window then slammed shut with Chiefs failing to find a suitable striker for their game plan for the season.

Chiefs chasing a striker

Chiefs were linked to a wide range of strikers during the window, both local and internationally based. On the international front, they were linked to DR Congo international Fiston Mayele. It was not the first time the Glamour Boys were linked with the marksman. After an impressive stint at Yanga SC, the club inquired about his services. The player was reportedly keen according to his agent, but Amakhosi bulked at his price tag.

Mayele ended up at Pyramids FC in Egypt. Upon arrival at Chiefs, Nabi seemed to be hoping for a reunion with his former striker. That did not materialise as the club was not prepared to sell after just one season. Mayo on the other hand, saw an offer from the club match the demands of Cape Town City. However, the move taking the player to Algeria was already advanced.

Another striker that Chiefs were hot on the heels of was Iqraam Rayners. Arch rivals Orlando Pirates were also reported to be interested in the former Stellenbosch FC striker. Now according to The Citizen, Nabi really wanted Amakhosi management to sign the player before Mamelodi Sundowns.

Rayners top of Nabi’s list

“Nabi was keen on Rayners and when Chiefs enquired about him, they were told that they wanted to keep him, but to everyone’s surprise, he was sold to Sundowns. Maybe the Sundowns’ offer was too good to turn down. These things happen all the time in football.”. Said the source.

Rayners would then come back to haunt Chiefs by scoring the winner in a 2-1 Sundowns win over the weekend. Amakhosi fans, is Rayners a massive miss for your club? Feel free to leave your thoughts and feelings below.
