Pirates then won the first MTN8 final of 1974 against Moroka Swallows, but their title defence faltered in November, losing 6-2 on aggregate to Chiefs.
Narrow defeat and dramatic fall
After edging Benoni in the 1978 final, Pirates faced Swallows in 1979, ultimately losing 4-2 on aggregate despite a spirited second-leg performance.
Pirates secured victory over Highlands Park in 1983, but their defence ended dramatically in 1985 with a 4-1 quarterfinal loss to Arcadia.
Trophy Comeback and resounding return
Following a trophy drought, Pirates clinched the 1993 title with a 3-1 win over Witbank Aces, but their 1994 run ended in the semifinals against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Pirates bounced back after a hiatus, winning the 1996 final against QwaQwa Stars and following up with a 2-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town in 2000.
Back-to-back titles and shocking collapse
In 2010, Pirates triumphed in a penalty shootout against Swallows, and the following year they retained their crown with a 1-0 victory over Chiefs.
After a promising start in 2012, Pirates faced a shocking 3-0 defeat against SuperSport United in the semifinals, ending their bid for a third consecutive final.
Early exit and title defence triumph
In the 2021 quarterfinals, Pirates faced Swallows but suffered an early exit after a 2-1 defeat.
Pirates then showcased resilience in 2022 with a stunning freekick from Monnapule Saleng, defeating AmaZulu in the final. They successfully defended their title in 2023, winning against the formidable Sundowns in a penalty shootout.
