Dortley: Zwane’s Expertise with Chiefs Won’t Benefit AmaZulu
Arthur Zwane’s extensive experience with Kaizer Chiefs, having dedicated 24 years to the club in various capacities, is unlikely to benefit AmaZulu at FNB Stadium this Tuesday (19:30).
This perspective was shared by Chiefs defender Rushwin Dortley, who has shown remarkable form this season since his arrival from Cape Town Spurs during the off-season.
Zwane transitioned from his role as head of the academy at Chiefs to become a co-coach at AmaZulu alongside Vusi Vilakazi in October.
Mangethe had a successful tenure with Chiefs from 2000 to 2010, making 252 appearances, scoring 32 goals, and accumulating an impressive 12 trophies with the Glamour Boys.
He also led Chiefs to the CAF Champions League final in 2021, making history as the first South African club to triumph in Morocco by defeating Wydad Casablanca in the semifinals en route to the final.
Due to this success, he is regarded as a club legend.
Nonetheless, Dortley rebuffs the idea that ‘10111’ possesses insider knowledge that could benefit AmaZulu.
“We’ve prepared thoroughly for this match and have a solid strategy,” he states, adding, “Since Arthur Zwane’s departure, things have changed here, and new coaches have arrived. Therefore, I don’t believe he has any special insight on the current dynamics of the team.”
Tuesday’s encounter signifies the opening game of the second round of the Betway Premiership, and Chiefs are focused on ascending the standings in pursuit of a strong finish and the associated rewards.
“Our aim is to win every match and secure maximum points to climb the table,” Dortley remarks. “While we can still mathematically contend for the league title, our goal is at least a top-three finish to qualify for next season’s CAF competitions. We are eager to represent the club on the continent again.”
Chiefs head into this match following a loss to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby, which drew a full house at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
That match took an emotional toll on everyone associated with the club, particularly after losing in the last minute due to a questionable penalty converted by Patrick Maswanganyi.
With little time to recover between games, players’ fitness and endurance are put to the test, yet Dortley expresses confidence in the coaching staff’s capacity to prepare them for the upcoming match.
“Our conditioning coach is exceptional. He knows exactly what he’s doing. We’ve adhered to his recovery protocols and are ready to give our best on Tuesday,” he shares.
Dortley, who has signed a contract until 2027 and established himself within the Bafana Bafana setup, has appeared in 16 matches across all competitions for Chiefs so far. He has yet to score his first goal for Amakhosi, and when asked about this, he grins, “Hopefully on Tuesday.”
