Keet Partners with Mkhize to Leave the City
Veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet has announced his exit from Cape Town City after the team’s relegation.
He becomes the second player to depart as a result of the club’s fall to the Motsepe Foundation Championship for the upcoming season.
Cape Town City lost their top-tier status, finishing second from the bottom last season and subsequently failing to secure their place through the PSL relegation and promotion playoffs. Keet, a former PSL Goalkeeper of the Season with Bidvest Wits, did not participate in the final playoff match against Casric Stars, as the team’s relegation had already been confirmed by that point.
Keet, who also has international experience and was part of the Bafana Bafana squad during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, is reportedly being linked to a move to Sekhukhune United, where he could reunite with coach Eric Tinkler.
The 35-year-old’s contract with City was initially set to run until the end of 2026, but the unfortunate relegation resulted in its early termination. Keet’s farewell message simply read, “Thank you Citizens. Thank you Cape Town City FC.”

It was Eric Tinkler who initially brought Keet to Cape Town City in July 2021 from KV Kortrijk in Belgium. Over his tenure with the club, Keet appeared in 104 matches and impressively secured 40 clean sheets.
Keet’s exit comes on the heels of club captain Thami Mkhize’s recent announcement of his own departure from John Comitis’ side.
