In the midst of the chaos, Verstappen spun around before managing to recover and fell back to 11th place.
The Dutchman was visibly frustrated, stating on his team radio: “Whoa, mate! Jesus, just suddenly again slows down!”
Following this, stewards had to investigate Piastri for a safety car violation, which resulted in a hefty ten-second penalty.
Lando Norris only needed to stay close to his teammate to secure victory at Silverstone.
The safety car was deployed after Isack Hadjar crashed into the wall but fortunately emerged unscathed.
The young Racing Bulls driver had collided with the rear of Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown commented on Sky Sports F1: “We’re discussing it here on the pit wall. That was a bit of a late safety car call.”
