The Black Cats are interested in bringing him in to challenge their current No 1, Anthony Patterson, for playing time.

As previously reported, the newly promoted Premier League team has just enlisted goalkeeper coach Neil Cutler.
He greatly admires the seasoned, four-time England international Johnstone, 32.
Cutler previously worked with Johnstone at Aston Villa and Wolves and is eager to reconnect at the Stadium of Light.
Although Sunderland has considered pricier goalkeepers in Europe, they might see Johnstone as a more affordable option domestically.
This move could materialize as a loan, given that Johnstone still has three years remaining on his contract with Wolves.
The Manchester United academy product Johnstone transferred to Wolves in a £10 million deal from Crystal Palace last summer.
Last season, Johnstone made 10 appearances for the Molineux side, including seven in league matches.
Unfortunately, he did not manage to keep any clean sheets during that time, conceding 17 goals.

His FA Cup performance was more promising.
He secured one clean sheet in three matches as Wolves defeated Bristol City and Blackburn before being eliminated in the fifth round through penalties against Bournemouth.
Johnstone’s last appearance for the Three Lions was in March 2024.
His final game was a 1-0 victory over Australia in October 2023.
