Latest Update on the Refurbishment of Moses Mabhida Stadium

The eThekwini Municipality has shared an encouraging update regarding the refurbishment project at Moses Mabhida Stadium, indicating that progress is on track.

At the end of last year, the municipality ratified a budget of R236 million aimed at revitalizing the 15-year-old stadium, with the goal of transforming it into a top-tier tourist attraction.

The stadium, which recently hosted the MTN8 final featuring Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch, along with the Nedbank Cup, has experienced significant structural issues in recent years. To tackle these challenges and increase its appeal, the municipality announced extensive refurbishment plans.

Enhancing Visitor Experience with New Attractions

Current renovations include the introduction of a new SkyCar, a large swing, a zip line, and an expanded viewing platform. The SkyCar, which is a glass-enclosed lift ascending the stadium’s arch, is anticipated to be operational by summer 2025.

Additional planned enhancements consist of:

  • A larger viewing platform with a cantilevered glass floor, providing an “Air Walk” experience that boasts a 60 percent increase in floor area.
  • A new SkyCar designed for longer travel time and accessibility for people with disabilities.
  • A revamped Big Swing with better access to its launching area.
  • A new Zip Line that terminates at People’s Park.
  • A Compression Ring Walk for sweeping views that includes an option for a sea-facing bungee jump.
  • Restored arch lighting with themed color options.

This project, which began last year, is aimed at maintaining the stadium’s world-class reputation and improving its functionality for both local and international events. It underscores the city’s commitment to preserving essential infrastructure while ensuring safety, accessibility, and an enhanced visitor experience. The enhancements have been strategically phased to minimize any disruptions to ongoing activities and public access.

Addressing Structural Integrity and Safety

Significant strides have been made in the emergency rehabilitation of the concrete and roof structure, concentrating on major identified defects. This work includes the rehabilitation of steel, concrete, and roof components, addressing issues such as weakened mechanical joints, treatment of steel corrosion, and repairs to the arch structure.

In the initial phase, key maintenance issues were prioritized. These actions included replacing the damaged roof membrane, applying corrosion-resistant coatings to exposed steel, replacing the arch cladding, removing corroded SkyCar components, and improving drainage systems for more straightforward maintenance.

During the Community Services Committee meeting on July 17, a proposal for extending the emergency remedial work contract at the stadium was acknowledged. This extension, pending Council approval, aims to ensure the ongoing progress of critical repairs essential for maintaining the facility’s structural integrity and safety. The committee recognized the importance of completing the remaining work within the new timeline and stressed the need for close monitoring to ensure compliance with quality standards.

A Boost for Tourism and Economy

Upon completion, the renovations will guarantee that Moses Mabhida Stadium not only meets international standards but is also better prepared to host significant events, enhance visitor experiences, and contribute to the City’s economic and tourism development.

The stadium has already successfully hosted several prominent events, including the 2025 Nedbank Cup Final. It is scheduled to welcome the Toyota Cup between Kaizer Chiefs and Asante Kotoko on July 26, in addition to various national league matches.

This refurbishment secures Moses Mabhida’s position as a leading venue for sports, concerts, and cultural events while also fostering local job creation, skills development, and small business support through contracts with local service providers.

The refurbishment showcases the eThekwini Municipality’s continuous efforts to invest in infrastructure that promotes tourism, economic development, and community pride. The City will provide further updates as the project unfolds and encourages residents and visitors to remain engaged and take pride in this world-class facility.

As a significant tourism attraction in Durban, the city has recently generated nearly R1 billion, with revenues stemming from events such as the Nedbank Cup final, the renowned Comrades Marathon, and the Hollywoodbets Durban July.
