Barker Stays Positive Amid Slow Start
Stellenbosch United coach Steve Barker expresses confidence that they will soon reclaim their desired position in the Betway Premiership league within the next few matches.
Stellies faced a challenging beginning to the season, registering two losses and one draw, leaving them at 14th place with a single point. The losses were against the Soweto Giants, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
“I believe it’s about our style of play. I always remind everyone that our role as coaches is to be concerned if we’re continuously being outplayed and conceding easy goals,” Barker stated.
“However, if you analyze the goal that the Chiefs scored following the red card, it was a well-taken free kick. The goal conceded against Pirates came from outside the box—a remarkable shot. Hence, I feel we are performing well enough to avoid negativity and panic.”
“As long as we continue to exhibit the form we’ve shown in the cup competitions and look to improve in a few areas in the league, I’m confident that in the next four to five matches, we will be back in the positions we aspire to be within the league.”

Barker is also hopeful that his three players chosen in Hugo Broos’ preliminary squad for Bafana Bafana will make the final selection, recognizing their commendable performances in the club.
The selected players include Thabo Moloisane, Devin Titus, and Ashley Cupido.
“I’m thrilled for the players who are part of the Bafana preliminary squad. Let’s hope they make the final cut. All three players, Thabo and Devin, have displayed remarkable consistency over time,” remarked Barker.
Barker has also updated on Ashley Cupido’s progress, confirming he will be ready for their upcoming league match against Marumo Gallants at Danie Craven Stadium on Tuesday.
“Ashley has made significant progress. Adjusting wasn’t easy for him coming from Cape Town Spurs where the last season was tough. Nevertheless, he demonstrated his ability to score goals, proving he is a talented player with pace and strength,” he added.
“He can score with both feet and even aerially, so he is on a good path. He had a minor hamstring issue, but he’s recovered, and he’ll be available for our match on Tuesday.”
