Mngqithi Foresees “Unexpected Twists” in the Competitive PSL Title Race

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi anticipates that this year’s league title race will bring unexpected twists, offering a refreshing shift from the typical lack of competition.

He finds it “uninteresting when the league lacks rivalry,” and the season’s onset suggests a different scenario.

For the last eight years, Mamelodi Sundowns have been the dominant force in the league. Though Orlando Pirates have tried to mount a challenge over the past three seasons, they have ultimately not succeeded.

This season, however, Kaizer Chiefs have shown signs of revival. Currently, they sit joint-top of the Betway Premiership table with 13 points after five matches, sharing this position with Sekhukhune United, who lead on goal difference.

Remarkably, the Chiefs, who narrowly lost the 2019/20 league title to Sundowns in the dying moments, have not conceded a goal this season thus far.

Their impressive form was highlighted by a goalless draw against Sundowns at FNB Stadium last week, a far cry from previous meetings where they faced heavy defeats.

Sundowns currently sit in third place, just two points behind Sekhukhune and Chiefs. Given the current dynamics, it appears that this season’s PSL will not be dominated by a single team.

Pirates have made strides as well, recently hiring a new coach and winning their last four matches, including three in the league, climbing to fifth place.

“Personally, I’m quite impressed with how the league is shaping up,” remarked Mngqithi, whose team suffered a loss to the Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.

“I enjoy competition; I appreciate every coach striving to enhance their teams so we can witness player and team development.”

“When there is no clear favorite, it adds intrigue to the competition. Personally, I’m very impressed. I believe this season holds the potential for numerous surprises.”

As the season resumes after the FIFA international break, the Chiefs will face Sekhukhune United in a top-tier clash at FNB Stadium on 16 September.

This encounter is anticipated to be a tactical showdown between the two teams.
