Moodie Reflects on Playing the All Blacks at Eden Park: “A Unique Experience”
Springbok utility back Canan Moodie remarks that taking on the All Blacks at their legendary venue, Eden Park, carries a unique significance, despite his flawless history against them.
The two rugby giants are set to meet in the third fixture of the Rugby Championship, with both sides having recorded one win and one loss in their opening matches.
If Moodie is included in Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus’ match-23 lineup on Thursday, it will mark his 17th Test appearance and the first of two encounters against their fierce rivals in New Zealand.
At only 22 years old, Moodie is the youngest player in the touring squad, yet he has already faced the All Blacks on two occasions. The Springboks triumphed in both matches: an 18-12 win in the Rugby Championship in Cape Town last year and a record-setting 35-7 victory in London during a 2023 Rugby World Cup warm-up, where Moodie contributed with a try.
Despite the Springboks currently enjoying a four-match winning streak against the All Blacks, Moodie acknowledges that this match possesses a distinct atmosphere, scheduled to kick off at 09:05 on Saturday at Eden Park.

“I’ve faced the All Blacks twice before, at Allianz Stadium Twickenham and at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town, but the importance of this match at Eden Park is enormous – it’s an incredible experience,” said Moodie.
“I recall waking up early to watch the Springboks battle the All Blacks in South Africa during my childhood, and the chance to possibly play this weekend is monumental.”
This trip to New Zealand marks Moodie’s first visit to the land of the long white cloud. While he’s appreciating the city, he admitted that overcoming jetlag and adjusting to the new time zones presented a challenge he welcomes.
“Playing in Auckland is daunting, especially at Eden Park, and considering the weight of this match (given the historic rivalry and the significance of this venue), it’s something special,” noted Moodie.
“Both teams have a lot at stake. It’s a crucial match for the All Blacks, particularly since it might celebrate Ardie Savea’s 100th Test, but we also have our objectives heading into this game.”
“This is a critical match for us as well, and we’re committed to giving our all to secure the win.”
The former Junior Springbok speedster is unfazed about potentially playing at either centre or wing, stating: “I enjoy both roles. It’s simply a matter of mentally transitioning to the position I’ll be playing early in the week, so it’s all about making that adjustment.”
The match will be broadcast live on SuperSport, with the kick-off scheduled for Saturday at 09:05 (SA time).
