JIMMY FLOYD HASSELBAINK believes that Chelsea’s new manager Xabi Alonso should consider a surprising move for John Stones.

The England centre-back is available as a free agent after his contract with Manchester City expired last month.

Hasselbaink believes that the former Everton player’s experience would be a valuable addition to a youthful squad.

At 54, the Stamford Bridge legend feels that Stones’ injury history should not be a concern, especially as the lack of European fixtures will reduce the number of matchups in West London.

Hasselbaink mentioned to WhoScored: “I would love to see Alonso pursue Stones, who is a free agent.

“Some will argue, ‘Oh, but he’s often injured.’ This year, I think he would be a fantastic addition for Chelsea, given that they won’t compete in Champions League or European matches.

“Matches will be played from Saturday to Saturday, allowing for more rest, and he brings a wealth of experience. He can play for at least 30 minutes.”

Stones, now 32, had only 439 MINUTES of Premier League play last season due to injury setbacks.

Nevertheless, he earned a spot in England’s World Cup squad and played a crucial role in defense as the Three Lions overcame Norway to advance to the semi-finals.

Thomas Tuchel also included Stones in the starting lineup against Croatia, followed by two more appearances from the bench.


Stones made headlines by becoming the first player to represent England while being without a club when he came off the bench against DR Congo.

He had a trophy-laden career at Man City, winning six Premier League titles, five Carabao Cups, three FA Cups, and the Champions League.
