Ex-Man Utd Star Recalls Embarrassing Shirt Swap Attempt with Real Madrid Galacticos

PHIL NEVILLE has shared a story about being notably rejected when he sought to swap shirts after Manchester United’s remarkable Champions League victory against Real Madrid in 2003.

The Old Trafford legend, now 49, rose through the Red Devils’ youth system alongside stars like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and his brother Gary.

Neville, who was consulted by England head coach Thomas Tuchel in preparation for the World Cup, enjoyed a trophy-filled career while wearing United’s colors.

The former right-back secured six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and the Champions League before moving to Everton.

However, Neville faced embarrassment when Real Madrid’s star players declined to exchange jerseys with him after United’s thrilling 4-3 victory in April 2003.

A number of legendary Galacticos were uninterested in adding his shirt to their collection.

Neville recounted to The Times: “There’s a story I sometimes tell about an incident that occurred after a match against Real Madrid in 2003.

“I came off the United bench that night during an incredible match. David Beckham scored twice for United, a performance that likely sealed his transfer to the Bernabeu later that year.

“After the match, I was eager to swap my shirt with one of theirs since this was a fantastic Real team.

“A team that featured Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, and Roberto Carlos, along with several other remarkable players.

“My shirt was submitted for exchange in their dressing room, and after around five minutes, their kitman returned it to me.”

Despite their victory at Old Trafford, United failed to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

A Ruud van Nistelrooy goal, an Ivan Helguera own goal, and Beckham’s brace offered the Red Devils hope, but Ronaldo’s treble ultimately sealed a 6-5 aggregate win for Real Madrid.

Neville has been considering his options after his dismissal from Portland Timbers in May.

This ended a two-and-a-half-year tenure with the MLS club, where he recorded 34 wins out of 95 matches.

He previously managed Inter Miami before being let go three years ago, and has also led the England Lionesses after retiring from playing.
