Ouaddou Highlights Positives in Pirates’ Performance

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou addressed his team’s draw with Spanish club Las Palmas during their preseason friendly in Spain on Thursday evening.

This match marked the Buccaneers’ third game in their buildup for the 2025/26 season, following a 2-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers and a 1-1 tie against Cypriot team Pafos.

While the team did not score against Las Palmas, Ouaddou underscored the encouraging elements of his squad’s display.

“This game today (Thursday) was challenging; we can say we spent a lot of time defending, and we faced a very impressive team,” he remarked.

“There are several positive takeaways, even though we didn’t find the net. I can confidently say that my team exhibits a strong team spirit, and it is quite substantial.”

The Moroccan coach stressed the significance of this team spirit, especially with the upcoming CAF Champions League fixtures on the horizon.

“Throughout the season, we will rely on this team spirit, particularly when we play away in the Champions League. Therefore, we must focus on the positive aspects from today.”

The Pirates are set to conclude their preseason campaign in Spain on Saturday against Granada at the Marbella Football Centre, kicking off at 19:00.

The Buccaneers are eager to earn their first victory in four matches, having registered two draws and one loss.

These preseason encounters are vital for the team as they prepare to compete in five tournaments next season: the MTN8 Cup, Betway Premiership, Carling Knockout, Nedbank Cup, and the Champions League.

Last season, under Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, who has since joined Egyptian club Al Ahly, Pirates managed to win only one trophy, the MTN8 Cup.

With Ouaddou now leading the team, the Buccaneers aim for multiple titles, building on their semifinal run in the Champions League and second-place finishes in the Nedbank Cup and Betway Premiership.

The team’s performances in these preseason matches will be crucial for their prospects in the upcoming season.
