Chiefs Acquire Ex-Mamelodi Sundowns Star

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the acquisition of former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lebohang Maboe.

The 31-year-old was released by Sundowns after the last season, having spent the latter part of the campaign on loan at SuperSport United.

Maboe’s journey at Sundowns began in the 2018/19 season when he transferred from Maritzburg United. His tenure will be remembered fondly by both teams. Notably, he netted a hat-trick in the concluding match of the 2019/20 season against Black Leopards—an instrumental victory that clinched the league title for Sundowns, preventing Chiefs from securing it since they only needed a win that day but ended up drawing with Baroka FC.

Throughout his time at Sundowns, Maboe amassed an impressive collection of six league titles, two Nedbank Cups, one Carling Knockout, one MTN8, and the first-ever African Football League.

At Chiefs, he will reunite with his previous teammate Siphesihle Ndlovu, who was also brought into the team this off-season from Siwelele FC (formerly SuperSport United). The duo had previously built a strong partnership at Maritzburg United under coach Fadlu Davids during the 2017/18 season. Their exceptional performances helped Maritzburg attain their highest league finish of fourth place and reach their inaugural cup final, where they fell to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup final.

Maboe is the tenth addition to Chiefs during this transfer window, joining Luke Baartman, Nkanyiso Shinga, Etiosa Ighodaro, Asanele Velebayi, Ethan Chislett, Flavio Silva, Paseka Mako, Thabiso Monyane, and Siphesihle Ndlovu.

In an interesting matchup, Chiefs will go up against Sundowns in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium on Wednesday at 19:30.
