Michael van Gerwen Urged to Break Old Habits or Risk Falling Behind Rivals in Darts
MICHAEL VAN GERWEN has been advised to enhance his training regimen if he aims to uphold his status among the elite darts players.
The Dutch star has faced challenges in his form this year, with Luke Littler and Luke Humphries emerging as the new dominant forces.

His most recent tournament win was at the German Darts Masters in April, and last week, he faced defeat against world No. 45 Madars Razma in the Players Championship 24.
Former player Vincent van der Voort believes there’s no doubt about Van Gerwen’s talent, but he insists that Mighty Mike needs to put in more practice to improve and remain competitive in the sport.
He commented on the Darts Draait Door podcast: “He has really dropped down significantly.
“Scoring just 90 when on the Pro Tour, he previously averaged 122 in a match. That disparity — occasional extreme highs against frequent mediocrity — concerns him.
“No athlete can reach the pinnacle of their sport without consistent training. If he wants to stay among the elite, major improvements are necessary.
“The younger players are clearly putting in daily work and showing hunger.
“Michael seems to depend too much on his natural talent and experience. But that alone won’t suffice anymore.
“This is his career; he has to make his own choices. However, if he aims to reclaim his top position, he needs to dedicate himself to daily training. Otherwise, it won’t be feasible.”

Guest on the podcast Damien Vlottes shared the opinion of his host, noting that Van Gerwen’s technique demands continuous practice.
He added: “His throwing motion isn’t fluid. It requires significant effort.
“Unless he commits to consistent practice, I don’t envision him returning to his former level.
“Elite sports demand concentration and discipline, even in tough times.”
