Enzo Fernandez’s stunning early strike and an Andrey Santos goal did the damage.

A late tap-in from Richarlison briefly sparked some hope for Spurs, but their efforts yielded nothing despite a frantic last ten minutes where they pushed hard against Chelsea.

It was unclear who relished the outcome more: the jubilant Chelsea fans delighting in their rivals’ misery or Hammers superfan Ross Kemp, who was also in attendance.

We are now gearing up for a thrilling finale worthy of a Eastenders Christmas special to see which of these London neighbours will be relegated from the Premier League.

Spurs fans are all too familiar with their struggles at Chelsea’s ground, which has become as certain as death, taxes, and a Mitchell brothers scuffle.

Their shocking run at Stamford Bridge now reads: Played 41, won ONE.

And yet they came into this match with a glimmer of hope, bolstered by the resurgence Roberto De Zerbi has brought to their survival efforts.

Having gone unbeaten in four matches recently, coupled with a run of three consecutive losses for Nuno Espirito Santo’s Hammers, they believed a point would secure their place in the league.

With a two-point gap to 18th-place West Ham that felt effectively like three due to Spurs’ better goal difference, they remained hopeful heading into Sunday when Tottenham will host Everton and West Ham will face Leeds.

However, it could have been secured had they avoided the sinking feeling that enveloped them in SW6 last night.

In theory, Chelsea was vulnerable, having lost nine of their last 11 matches, including Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City, and with interim coach Calum McFarlane still at the helm.

This situation is expected to change when the exciting Xabi Alonso takes over in July.

Yet once again, the Blues managed to rise to the occasion against their North London rivals and continue their pursuit of European qualification.

However, Bournemouth’s draw against Manchester City meant that the slim chance of Alonso guiding the club in the Champions League next year has fizzled out.

Spurs started well, with Jorrel Hato almost putting the ball past his own keeper and Mathys Tel hitting the post with a header.

But fate never seems to favor them at this ground, as De Zerbi acknowledged on Tuesday during a pep talk with his squad, and yet again history repeated itself.

Just 18 minutes in, Fernandez found space outside the Spurs box and unleashed a stunning shot from 25 yards that left keeper Antonin Kinsky helpless as it dipped and swerved into the bottom corner.

This inspired chants of “Tottenham Hotspur, it’s happening again” from the Matthew Harding Stand.

Chelsea ratings vs Spurs: Fernandez and Santos shine but Delap struggles

CHELSEA and Tottenham’s storied rivalry added a new chapter as the Blues pushed Spurs’ relegation battle to the final day.

An incredible goal from Enzo Fernandez initiated the action, marked by a unique mobile phone celebration.

The Blues dominated much of the first half, with Palmer coming close and Fernandez hitting the bar from a free-kick.

Home fans relished the chance to chant “that’s why you’re going down” every time a Spurs player missed the target.

Spurs only notable chance came when Mathys Tel’s header struck the post.

The news of Arsenal winning the title dampened spirits among both fan bases at the Bridge, but Chelsea fans found joy when Andrey Santos scored to make it 2-0 in the second half.

Spurs fought back, with Richarlison scoring following a clever backheel from Pape Matar Sarr, but it wasn’t enough for an equalizer.

This is how SunSport’s Chelsea reporter Lloyd Canfield rated the players…

One wondered if the away players were affected by the chants as they seemed to struggle at that moment.

Fernandez nearly added another, hitting a free-kick against the crossbar from a sharp angle.

Spirits dipped further as home fans sang “that’s why you’re going down” multiple times, first when Randal Kolo Muani mishit a cross and then again when Mathys Tel blasted a terrible shot into Row Z.

As Spurs drifted, De Zerbi sensed the need for change and prepared to make a triple substitution, including James Maddison, in the 67th minute.

But as the substitutions awaited, Chelsea struck again.

Muani turned the ball over to Cole Palmer, leading to a move that culminated with Pedro Neto crossing for Enzo, who assisted Santos who calmly put it into the corner.

This crushing blow seemed to seal Spurs’ fate for the evening.

Despite this, De Zerbi has instilled a stronger mentality, and with 17 minutes remaining, substitute Pape Sarr’s backheeled shot found Richarlison, who finished well.

It seemed poised for an equalizer when Maddison found space within the box, but his close-range attempt was blocked by Hato.

Following the corner, chaos erupted as Marc Cucurella wrestled an enraged Micky van de Ven to the ground, receiving a booking.

However, no penalty was awarded as technically the ball was not active.

The anarchy continued when Liam Delap appeared to elbow Djed Spence in the face but was only cautioned.

This was reminiscent of the infamous Battle of the Bridge ten years ago.

Now Tottenham must show courage and resilience on the final day against Everton to secure their place in the league next term.
