United Rugby Championship Unlocks 2026/27 Fixtures: Key Dates and South Africa Tour Highlights

The comprehensive United Rugby Championship fixture schedule for the 2026/27 season has been unveiled, establishing a new record for the earliest release of fixtures in the league’s history.

The upcoming season is set to commence on Friday, 25 September. This early announcement comes 129 days prior to the first match, breaking last season’s record of 128 days and giving fans, teams, broadcasters, and venues ample time to prepare for the league’s key events.

The 2026/27 fixture schedule aims to ensure a more equitable distribution of home and away games, along with an optimized touring model for South African teams, each of which will undertake three two-match Vodacom URC tours throughout the season.

The tournament will kick off with matches across Ireland, Italy, South Africa, and Wales during the opening weekend, with all five participating territories represented in Round 1. A highlight of this round features the 2023 Vodacom URC champions, Munster Rugby, hosting the 2024 champions, Glasgow Warriors, at Thomond Park on Saturday, 26 September.

Additional Round 1 highlights include Connacht Rugby facing the Stormers at Dexcom Stadium, the Lions taking on Leinster Rugby at Ellis Park Stadium, Ulster Rugby squaring off against Edinburgh Rugby at Affidea Stadium, and Scarlets competing against Cardiff Rugby in a Welsh derby at Parc y Scarlets.

The Sharks will kick off their season at home in Durban against the Ospreys, while the Bulls will start their campaign away at Zebre Parma in Italy.

The 2026/27 season is set to be another exciting chapter following a record-setting 2025/26 regular season that produced the tightest-ever Race to the Eight as teams competed for playoff spots and Investec Champions Cup qualifications.

Festive derby rounds will again play a significant role in the season, with Rounds 7, 8, and 9 scheduled throughout December and early January. The Race to the Eight will become more intense from Round 13 onwards, as the fight for knockout rugby heats up. Themed rounds will also return in the 2026/27 season, with more details forthcoming from the Vodacom URC.

The competition format will stay the same, with the top eight teams making it to the playoffs. The quarter-finals are slated to begin on Friday, 28 May, followed by the semi-finals on Saturday, 5 June, leading up to the Grand Final on Saturday, 19 June, where the 2026/27 champions will be determined.

The Vodacom URC expressed gratitude to its broadcast partners for their cooperation throughout the fixture-planning stages, which has been invaluable in providing stability for clubs and supporters alike.

Martin Anayi, CEO of the United Rugby Championship, stated: “Announcing our fixtures earlier than ever is a significant milestone and a crucial advancement for our clubs, supporters, broadcasters, and venues. Ensuring certainty for fans is immensely important to us. The more notice we can offer regarding fixtures and kick-off times, the easier it is for fans to organize their weekends, travel to matches, and support their teams throughout the season.

“This has been a highly collaborative effort with our clubs and broadcasters, and we appreciate the way they have partnered with us to create a more balanced fixture list. The touring model has improved the flow of home and away fixtures throughout the season while enhancing kick-off scheduling.

“After the closest-ever Race to the Eight in 2025/26, we are gearing up for another thrilling Vodacom URC season. The competitive level across the league keeps rising, and we know each round will significantly affect the battle for playoff positions, European qualifications, and ultimately, the championship.”

The Vodacom URC fixture planning continues to benefit from its collaboration with Ligalytics, a renowned German sports data and scheduling firm trusted across various sports such as rugby, football, cricket, basketball, and hockey. For the 2026/27 season, Ligalytics once again assisted the league in creating fixture models that addressed vital travel needs, a balanced home-and-away rhythm, stadium availability, regional restrictions, and broadcaster requirements.
